I'm planning on a trip to Northern India on my way to Nepal. What are some good sites to see? I would prefer smaller lest touristy towns with a rich history.
How are the trains? Would we be better off taking a bus?

First up, northern India is awesome! The train system will pretty much get you anywhere you wish to go, though I cannot promise it will get you on time. Buses will get you to the more remote spots. Once you get into the real Himalayan north, you will mostly travel by bus or jeep.
Some of the highlights for me were.
Darjeeling is good jumping off point (if you fly into an East Indian city like Kolkata). Sikkim is the North Eastern province bordering Nepal with phenomenal trekking in the Himalayas nearby. Trekking up near the mountains is about the definition of remote; passing through towns with populations in the dozens.
The areas further East of there are filled with tiny, remote counties, but are often very poor, with little infrastructure to support travelers, and difficulty getting there.
Nepal is filled with gorgeous small towns, but you'll just have to discover which to see as you travel through and meet people. Annapurna is supposed to be exquisite.
On the Northwest of India is Ladakh, a gorgeous remote city in the Himalayas. Rishikesh and Haridwar nearby are great, but often quite touristy.
